🌍 Part of the TASIS Schools network — global experience, local roots
TASIS Portugal is the newest of four schools in the TASIS network, a Swiss-founded group of American international schools with over 60 years of experience. Students benefit from a shared academic philosophy, faculty exchanges, and a globally connected alumni community. Sister schools:
🇨🇭 TASIS Switzerland (since 1956)
🇬🇧 TASIS England (since 1976)
🇦🇲 TASIS Armenia (since 2006)
🇵🇹 TASIS Portugal (since 2020)
TASIS Portugal — The American School in Portugal — opened in 2020 on a beautifully designed campus in Linhó, Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. Despite being the youngest of the four TASIS schools, it brings with it the institutional depth and pedagogical philosophy of a network founded in Switzerland in 1956. The campus was designed by architect David Mayernik, winner of the Palladio Award from the Traditional Building Conference.
The school's academic approach is deliberately distinctive. Lower and middle school students follow the Core Knowledge curriculum — one of the few schools in the world to earn School of Distinction status for lower school curricular fidelity — combined with Singapore Math. In high school, the programme transitions to Cambridge IGCSE (Grades 9–10), followed by the IB Diploma Programme (Grades 11–12). This layered structure is designed to build genuinely well-read, broadly educated students before they enter the rigour of IB.
One of TASIS Portugal's most practical differentiators is what's included in tuition: lunch and two snacks every day, all books and instructional materials, after-school activities, and school field trips. The teacher-to-student ratio is approximately 1:8, with two qualified full-time teachers in every pre-kindergarten through Grade 4 classroom.
The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is actively building a new state-of-the-art campus — partly funded by the one-time Campus Enhancement Fee paid by families on enrolment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the TASIS network and why does it matter? +
TASIS (The American School in Switzerland) was founded in 1956 and now operates four schools across Europe and Armenia. Being part of this network means TASIS Portugal benefits from over 60 years of accumulated experience in international education, a shared academic philosophy, faculty development resources, and a globally connected alumni community. For families who may move between countries, the shared TASIS culture across campuses can ease transitions considerably.
What curriculum does TASIS Portugal follow? +
TASIS Portugal uses a layered approach: Core Knowledge (a content-rich American curriculum) from Pre-K through Grade 8, combined with Singapore Math. In Grades 9–10, students take Cambridge IGCSE. In Grades 11–12, students pursue the IB Diploma Programme. The school is one of the few in the world to hold School of Distinction status for Core Knowledge curricular fidelity.
What is included in the tuition fee? +
Tuition at TASIS Portugal includes a nutritious lunch and two snacks every day, all books and instructional materials, after-school activities (clubs and sports), violins for required grades, and school field trips. This is more inclusive than many comparable schools in the area, where meals and ASA are typically charged separately.
What is the Campus Enhancement Fee? +
The Campus Enhancement Fee (€5,000 for Kindergarten and above, €3,000 for Pre-K applied toward tuition) is a one-time payment required when accepting an offer of admission. The funds go directly toward building a new state-of-the-art campus — new construction, learning spaces, playing areas, and equipment. It is not charged in subsequent years.
What is the teacher-to-student ratio at TASIS Portugal? +
The ratio across all classes is approximately 1:8. In Pre-K through Grade 4, each class has two qualified full-time teachers, plus additional specialty teachers. From Grade 5 upward, students have one primary teacher plus subject-specialist teachers for Singapore Math, foreign languages, science and other subjects.
What are the total first-year costs at TASIS Portugal? +
First-year costs include tuition plus the one-time Campus Enhancement Fee and the application fee. For a child starting in Grade 6, for example: tuition €20,028 + Campus Enhancement Fee €5,000 + application fee €100 + annual re-enrolment €750 = approximately €25,878 in year one. From year two onwards, only tuition and re-enrolment apply. Transport is not included and is arranged separately with the admissions team.
